Winter Holiday Destinations: The Ultimate Bucket List

Winter isn’t just coming, it has officially arrived! And even though we love the sun, and all the sun-kissed skin, freckles on your face and summer dresses that come with it- sometimes it’s nice to pack up your winter woollies, and trade in the tropical beaches in search of all the festive feels of a winter holiday, and truly embrace the cold, cozy, winter months. There are heaps of advantages to travelling to cooler countries at this time of year and the biggest pro is beating all the tourist traffic! As everyone is scattering to the sunniest places they can find, you can wrap up warm and enjoy exploring these epic destinations without herds of tourists getting in the way.

Banff, Canada

Winter in the Rockies is something everyone needs to experience once, and the Banff mountains are an out of this world experience! You can strap on your skies and admire the views while hurdling down the mountains, or maybe go ice-skating on the freshly frozen Lake Louise, with the rink being named one of the most beautiful in the world. And when it comes time to relax you can cuddle up by the fire with a good book and glass of wine in the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Iceland, Europe

Iceland is famous for its chilly atmosphere, but there’s something special about visiting during the winter holidays. You can indulge in the snowy paradise by relaxing in hot springs, or maybe hike some glaciers. But also, and maybe more importantly, you are arriving smack dab in the middle of the best time to spot the legendary Northern Lights! And during the winter period the prices drop by almost 50%- need we say more?

Jukkasjärvi, Sweden

Have you ever dreamed of staying in a hotel made completely out of ice? Well, we have some good news for you- in the little village of Jukkasjarvi you can find an 80-room hotel, made entirely, yes you guessed it,  from fresh snow and ice! Visiting this unique hotel is one of the biggest highlights of travelling to Sweden in the winter, mainly because it’s the only time you will find it standing. The Ice Hotel has to be rebuilt every year, usually opening in December and begins to melt in April.

Patagonia, Argentina

The most popular time to visit Patagonia is during December to February, with temperatures reaching a high of 15 degrees. And even though this is the busy tourist season, because it’s located in such a remote corner of the world, even the high season doesn’t necessarily mean a lot of crowds. With some of the most stunning vistas in Argentina and Chile, unique wildlife and diverse climate, this winter holiday destination is definitely a bucket list contender.

Dublin, Ireland

There is nothing quite like visiting Dublin during the festive period. With delightful continental Christmas markets filled with cute stalls and exotic cuisines, cobbled streets with buskers playing your favourite Christmas songs, and the atmosphere of a city that has a story to tell. Why not grab a pint of the famous black stuff at the Guinness factory, take a tour of Kilmainham Gaol or cozy up by the fire with an Irish Whiskey in one of the many traditional bars lining the famous Temple Bar.
