This great full day that adventure begins at 10:00 a.m where we will pick you up at the hostel of your choice. Our first stop is Monte Alban ruins, where we will spend 2 hours in order for you to enjoy the Ancient Mecca of the Zapotecas "cloud people" and Mixtecas, two of the most highly advanced civilizations in pre-Hispanic
Mexico
.
Monte Albán.
Only 8 kilometers from Oaxaca City, Monte Albán was founded around 500 AD by people fro the nearby Valley towns. It was capital of the Zapotecs, and one of the first cities of Mesoamerica being very populated during its peak. It flourished until 750 AD, reaching its peak around 600 AD. Located in the center of the Valley of Oaxaca Monet Albán held political, economic, and ideological control over other communities around the Valley and surrounding mountains. It boasted more than 25,000 inhabitants.
Arrazola.
Here artisans use wood from the copal tree to create fantastic, imaginary animal figures, known as alebrijes, which are exhibited in the artisans´ houses and in various shops in oaxaca city.
Cuilapan.
12 kilometers from oaxaca City on the highway towards Zaachila, this unfinished but marvelous religious complex, constructed by Dominicans in the 16th century. It consists of the ex-convent, a church and chapel with a basilica type floor plan. Its name in Nahuatl means dyed river or rattles over waters, it was formerly called Coyolapan.
Atzompa.
This town is just 8 kilomters from Oaxaca city. An ideal place to see how the beautiful terracotta and green-glazed items are made. The pots are made following ancient, ancestral techniques.
Coyotepec.
It is located12 kilometers along Federal Highway 175. Its main attraction is the black pottery made by local artisans, who produce extraordinary beautiful items using openwork and polishing techniques. These articles can be bought in the handicraft market or in the houses of the craftsmen themselves. We´ll visit Doña Rosa´s workshop to see the process of making black pottery.
Monte Alban was built around 700 BC and mysteriously abandoned over 1000 years ago. This archeological site is one of those you can't miss.
We will then visit Arrazola, famous for the wood carvers, and the production of the "Alebriges", we'll follow our short escape towards Cuilapam de Guerrero which is a 16th Century Dominican exmonastery. Then, we will continue towards San Bartolo Coyotepec, hometown of the impressive black clay pottery. We'll be back at around 6 p.m!
