Easter Island Travel Guide
Located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, Easter Island ranks as one of the most visited sites on the planet making it a tourist destination per excellence. The great stone heads are undoubtedly the most popular and most recognisable attraction of the island, being also one of the most photographed in the world.
Here are some interesting practical tips to travel to and within Easter Island:
- Easter Island Entrance Fee: As a first practical information, you should know that to enter the Easter Island it is necessary to pay 30,000 Chilean pesos, equivalent to about US$36.
- Getting to Easter Island: There are two ways to reach Easter Island. The most used one is the connecting flight from Santiago by LAN airline. There is also a connection linking the Easter Island to Tahiti, in French Polynesia. Another way to reach the island is by boat. From Valparaiso it comes out twice a year, in May and September and takes about seven days to reach Easter Island. What is special about this option is that you must go & return by boat, so you must take into account the number of days you will need for your trip. Still, there is a way back by airplane, if you show a closed-day ticket as you buy the boat trip, and if you request permission to the Chilean Navy by phone or by mail.
- Transport in Easter Island: Transport within Easter Island can be on your own as it’s possible to go around both by bicycle or by different walking tours. The longest distance that exists on the island is 15 kilometres, that’s why you can walk perfectly from one place to another. There are two roads that connect the island. It is also possible to rent a car or a motorcycle. Renting a car usually costs about US$40 a day, while the motorcycle is a bit cheaper and may cost US$25.
It is important to know that there is no public transport on the island, so, the only other form of internal transportation is the taxi.
