**Please note that if you wish to volunteer with a project that works with children, you will have to undergo and pass a criminal records background check prior to arrival. You must make these preparations in your home country and send us the results prior to your trip so that we can confirm your volunteer project placement.

Overview:

Participate in an exciting and fulfilling Voluntour opportunity in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam. Available programs offer volunteer work in Elderly Care, Childcare in a local Orphanage, Care for Children Living with HIV, Healthcare for Children with Disabilities, and Teaching. You will be placed based on your preferences and on the program’s need for volunteers.

 

Location:

Ho Chi Minh City, formerly named and often still referred to as Saigon, is the largest city in Vietnam. The city is surrounded by stunning nature including the Saigon River and the Mekong River Delta, about 80 kms from the South China Sea. Having been colonized by both China and France, Vietnam offers an amazing diversity of cultures, architecture, food, and art. Ho Chi Minh City is an international tourist destination, bursting with vibrant culture, incredible cuisine, colourful people, and rapid economic growth.

 

Day by Day Itinerary:

Day 1 (Monday): Ho Chi Minh City Airport Pick-Up

Upon your arrival at Tan Son Nhat International Airport you will be picked up any time after 10am and transferred to your volunteer house in Ho Chi Minh City. Enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure to settle into your home for the next two weeks. Overnight in Ho Chi Minh City.

 

Day 2 (Tuesday): Welcome Meeting & Orientation (B/L/D)

Enjoy breakfast at the volunteer house before receiving an orientation about Ho Chi Minh City and the program covering the following points:

  • Vietnam & its culture
  • Accommodation facilities
  • Social development and the role of volunteers
  • How volunteering works & introduction to project
  • Project activities
  • Cultural responsibility
  • Personal safety & Code of Conduct
  • Information on the local area

Enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure and prepare for the exciting weeks ahead. Overnight in Ho Chi Minh City.

Volunteer Projects:

There are volunteering possibilities in 5 categories:

  • Care for the Elderly
  • Orphan Care Home
  • Teaching
  • Children with HIV
  • Children with Disabilities

Facilities at Volunteer Accommodation:

The Ho Chi Minh City Volunteer House is located in the northern Thu Duc district, 10km from District 1, the tourist center of Saigon. The location has easy access to taxis and public transportation, bustling markets, and street food. The facility has 6 air-conditioned rooms with bunk beds and basic shelving for your belongings. Four of the rooms have a private bathroom attached, and the other two rooms share a restroom. The house has one shared lock-box for passports and other small valuables. The house is outfitted with wi-fi, television, hot water, washing machines, games, and a computer for volunteer use. Please remember, however, that this is a developing country and these services may not always be functioning properly. Expect a basic facility and a shared room. Consider bringing your own locks for suitcases. Purified drinking water will be provided.

CAMP MANAGER: The camp manager acts as an administrator of the camp facility & is responsible for the safety and well-being of the participants.

CAMP SUPPORT STAFF: The support staff includes a chef, helper, room cleaner, drivers, etc. The support staff is committed to creating an enjoyable and comfortable stay for the participants.

PROJECT EXECUTIVES: The project executives are the ground-handling coordinators on project sites. They accompany the participants while working on the projects.

Days 3-5 (Wednesday - Friday): Volunteer Project (3B/3L/3D)

After enjoying breakfast at your accommodation, you will start your volunteer work according to the indicated daily schedule. Enjoy free time at your leisure to take in all that Ho Chi Minh City has to offer on your own.

Typical Day of Volunteering:

07:30-08:30hrs: Breakfast at Volunteer Accommodation
09:00-12:30hrs: Project Work
12:30-13:30hrs: Packed Lunch at the Project Location
13:30-14:00hrs: Free Time/Relax
14:00-16:00hrs: Project Work
16:00-17:00hrs: Preparation Meeting/Lesson Planning for Next Day (if applicable)
17:00-17:30hrs: Tea/Coffee at Volunteer Accommodation
19:00-20:00hrs: Dinner at Volunteer Accommodation

During the week you will also participate in a Vietnamese Cooking Demonstration, where you will have the opportunity to taste delicious and traditional local cuisine and see how it's made.

 

Day 6 (Saturday): Mekong Delta Excursion (B)

After breakfast you will be picked up and transferred in an air-conditioned minivan for a 2.5 hour drive to My Tho, the gateway to the Mekong Delta. Enjoy stunning views of the passing countryside and learn about the region from your expert guide as you travel. Upon arrival in My Tho, you will board a small private boat for a cruise along the Mekong River. stopping at a fish farm to learn about one of the region’s main industries. Continue to another island for a guided stroll around lush gardens with a variety of tropical fruits to taste. Also visit a coconut candy factory and nearby villages to learn more about local industries and daily life. Later on in the day you’ll get to see a bee farm before transferring to smaller rowboats to travel in the delta’s more shallow canals. We will stop for lunch at a local restaurant (not included), where your guide will explain the regional cuisine and help you navigate the menu. After lunch, hop back in your boat and navigate narrow creeks to pass Phoenix Islet, a beautiful spot known for fish farming. In the afternoon we will arrive at your accommodation for check-in and you can enjoy the rest of the afternoon at your leisure to explore.

 

Day 7 (Sunday): Mekong Delta Excursion  - Transfer to Ho Chi Minh City (B/L/D)

Wake up early and enjoy an authentic local breakfast before hopping on a bicycle to visit the local village market with your guide. Browse stalls filled with fresh produce and other native foods as morning shoppers bustle about. Then head back to your host's home for a fun lesson about Vietnamese cuisine as you help prepare lunch. Savor the meal and talk with the family before you return to Ho Chi Minh City. Your tour ends with drop-off at your Volunteer House in Ho Chi Minh City in the early evening.



Days 8-12 (Monday - Friday): Volunteer Project (5B/5L/5D)

This week you will be doing morning and afternoon volunteer work depending on the schedule of your project. During the week you will also get to enjoy an authentic homemade meal with a Vietnamese family in their home and interact with them to get a taste of the local lifestyle.

 

Day 13 (Saturday): Mui Ne Excursion (B)

After breakfast, you will be picked up at your accommodation to start your day with a 4-hour drive to Mui Ne by comfortable minivan. En route to Mui Ne, enjoy a noontime lunch at a local restaurant (not included) and visit stunning Ta Cu.

If you’d like, you can take an optional hike to conquer Ta Cu Mountain, which reaches 509 meters above sea level. Hike with your guide on a moderately difficult climb along a forested trail. For an easier trip, you can take the 15-minute cable car ride up the mountain. When you reach Linh Son Truong Tho Pagoda, aka the Upper Pagoda, a distance of approximately 1 mile, you will be able to admire the 49-meter reclining Buddha statue — the largest in Southeast Asia — said to be entering the final state of nirvana.

Leaving this scenic spot with its coastal views, you’ll arrive in the resort town of Mui Ne and check in to your hotel. Enjoy the rest of the afternoon and evening at your leisure to explore the town or stroll the beach. Overnight in Mui Ne.

 

Day 14 (Sunday): Mui Ne Excursion, Transfer to Ho Chi Minh City & Airport Drop-Off (B)

Awaken early to enjoy the beautiful sunrise over the Mui Ne Red Sand Dunes, followed by breakfast. After a visit to the Fairy Stream and a charming fishing village, use the rest of the morning to relax on the beach or take in some water sports at your leisure (not included). You will be transferred back to Ho Chi Minh City and dropped off at your accommodation. Your adventure will end tonight with an airport drop-off any time after 8pm.
