While you are traveling in Nicaragua you may hear of the “Sandinistas” who formed the “Revolucion Popular Sandinista”, in opposition to the Somoza dictatorship in the 1960’s and 70’s. This same group adopted the name of the “Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional” (FSLN) and ousted the dictator from power in 1979. They attempted to govern the country pushing for socialist reform as civil war broke out across the nation. In 1990, Nicaragua became the first Central American country to elect a female president. Today it’s considered to be one of the safest countries in Central America so feel free to explore it’s untouched corners and make yourself at home (as always be aware of your surroundings and belongings in big cities).
Nicaragua was once known as “Costa Rica 20 years back”, however an increasing number of tourists have already discovered the gems of this beautiful “land of lakes and volcanoes” so it is quickly becoming developed and risks losing its innocent charm. Perhaps the most well-known destination is Granada situated on the shores of Lake Nicaragua. Hike the Volcan Concepcion and look out over the country, then spend the night on Ometepe Island and explore the island’s beaches.
Bypass Managua’s daunting city streets for a more relaxed journey back in time to Leon’s city center where you can learn about some of the interesting history of Nicaragua from the murals painted around town. Visit San Juan del Sur and take a surfing lesson with locals or simply relax on the pristine beaches along the Pacific Coast. Make your way into the highlands and over to the less-frequented Caribbean coast to explore a lesser-traveled side of Nicaragua.
