Explore the unassuming country of El Salvador virtually to yourself as the majority of travelers jump around this destination, you will be rewarded with warm smiles from welcoming locals and might end up finding an excuse to stay a few more days.
El Salvador declared independence from Spain in 1821 as a part of the Greater Republic of Central America and later as their own nation in 1898. A 12-year Salvadoran Civil War began in 1980 with the execution of Monsignor Romero who fought against the government by denouncing crimes and injustices committed against the civilians. By 1992 after more than a decade of fighting, El Salvador pulled out of a gruesome civil war and began rebuilding its infrastructure and economy. Today it ranks in the top 3 in Central America in the Human Development Index.
Today Salvadorians are eager to welcome foreigners to their country and share a part of their paradise with you. Find the best surfing spots along the Pacific Coast with black volcanic sand and cozy beach bungalows. Go into the mountains of eastern El Salvador to discover sleepy colonial towns where you will be the attraction of the year. Learn a little Spanish and you’ll find it easy to make friends with the locals. Eat a hot “pupusa” fresh off the skillet at a street stand as you wander home from your night out on the town.
