Named after Christopher Columbus, Colombia is South America’s 4th largest country. With Caribbean and Pacific beaches that dot the endless coastline, large tracts of Amazon rainforest, historically important cities such as Cartagena, and lively, outgoing people, it’s no wonder that Colombia’s tourism is growing at a booming rate of 10% per year.
Once synonymous to cocaine, drug lords such as Pablo Escobar, and internal military conflicts, Colombia has come a long way in cleaning up its image. Crime rates have dropped 50% from 2002 to 2006 and production of coca leaves (used to make cocaine) is slowly dwindling. With their steadily growing economy (as high as 8%) and declining poverty levels, Colombians have reason to smile again.
Part of the Spanish empire until it’s independence in 1819, Colombia is now an extremely multi-ethnic country. Mestizos (people of mixed race), Europeans, Amerindians and even large African population has given rise to incredibly beautiful people. A smorgasbord of cultures, customs and traditions, Colombia is also endowed with stunning 5,000 meter peaks, other amazing natural wonders and golden sandy beaches. Colombia’s tourism campaign states “the only risk is the never wanting to leave” which will ring true in your heart as you get to know the country and its warm, welcoming people.
