* Please Note: During your volunteering you will likely be grouped with other volunteers, but the rest of the trip will be self-guided, joining with small groups for tours.

You must make these preparations in your home country and send us the results prior to your trip so that we can confirm your volunteer project placement.
 
 
Overview:

Arrive to Santiago on Day 1 with an airport pick-up. See the city of Santiago on a bike tour on Day 2, then enjoy free time on Day 3. Transfer to your homestay accommodation on Day 4 and spend the week doing volunteer work. On Day 10 transfer to the bus station for your bus to Valparaiso. See the city on a walking tour on Day 11 and enjoy free time on Day 12. Return to Santiago for your last night on Day 13 and end your trip after check-out on Day 14.

 

Day by Day Itinerary:

Day 1 / Thursday: Santiago Airport Pick-Up 

Today you will be picked up at the Santiago airport and transferred to your accommodation in Santiago. Get settled in and then enjoy the rest of the day on your own. Overnight in Santiago.

 

Day 2 / Friday: Santiago Bike Tour (B) 

Peddle through Santiago's distinctive and vibrant neighborhoods with a local guide today on a fun city bike tour. Choose to take the morning or afternoon bike tours to learn about the country's history through the eyes and ears of a local. Fully experience Santiago's vivid personality on bicycle by riding through the lively streets, markets and plazas of the city center.

MORNING BIKE TOUR - The Local Way of Life & La Chimba Tour (9:30 am - 12:30 pm)

Join us for a hands-on exploration of Santiago's bustling personality by riding through the city center, fresh fruit, vegetable and seafood markets and learning about the history of the country through the eyes and ears of a local. Visit the Patronato neighborhood and make stops in the Korean and Middle Eastern districts. Continue to La Vega fruit and vegetable market where you can buy a refreshing snack, then continue on to the seafood market for great photo opportunities of freshly caught salmon and shrimp. Learn about Chile's rich cultural and religious history from the graffiti murals in town and explore the city center of Santiago by touring the Mapocho Train Terminal, Plaza de Armas Square and the Museum of Fine Arts. Take a peek into historical Chilean monuments at San Cristobal Hill, the Metropolitan Park and Pablo Neruda's house.

AFTERNOON BIKE TOUR - Parks & Politics Tour (2:30 pm - 5:30 pm)

We begin with a gentle ride through Santiago´s parks chatting about Chilean culture, education and immigration before diving into the hustle and bustle of downtown to explore General Pinochet´s notorious 1973 political coup and its repercussions. Using Santiago’s beautiful green spaces and lively city center, this tour will show you what an important regional and international political player Chile has been since its independence in 1810.  Explore the Providencia neighborhood with stops at Balmaceda Park, Bustamante Park and an early 20th century aristocratic neighborhood. Continue to discover the Santiago city center by making stops at Plaza Italia, the former United States Embassy, the Diego Portales building, the Lastarria Neighborhood, the Presidential Palace and the Paris-London neighborhood. This intriguing city tour is a spectacular way to get to know the history of the city and ride through some of the most picturesque neighborhoods in town.

Return to your accommodation and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. Overnight in Santiago.

 

Day 3 / Saturday: Santiago Free Day (B)

Enjoy a free day to see the sites around town on your own. Go out for a delicious Chilean lunch and do some souvenir shopping at the market. Make the most of your day as you wish! Overnight in Santiago.

 

Day 4 / Sunday: Santiago Accommodation to Volunteer Homestay (B/D)

Today you will be transferred to the Volunteer Homestay, where you will be welcomed by your hosts and get settled in. Make yourself at home and get acquainted with your new family. Overnight at homestay.

 

Days 5-9 / Monday - Friday: Volunteer Project (5B/5D) 

After having breakfast at your homestay accommodation, make your own way to the volunteer office today by public transportation at 9:00 am to receive a briefing about the volunteer project. Then you will be taken to your project to begin the volunteer work that you will undertake for the next 5 days.

A typical day of volunteering will be as follows, but timing of the activities might change depending on the chosen project and other factors:

  • 8:30 - Breakfast at homestay accommodation
  • 9:00 - Travel to the volunteer project by public transportation (travel time can be in between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on homestay and project location)
  • 10:00 - Volunteering
  • 13:30 - Lunch (not included)
  • 14:30 - Volunteering
  • 17:30 - Return to homestay
  • 19:30 - Dinner at homestay accommodation

Volunteer Projects (Depending on time of year and needs):

Street Animals: You will be working in an animal rescue center in Santiago. Your duties will be walking, playing, feeding, and caring for animals, helping the veterinary staff, helping in adopting campaigns, cleaning cages and enclosures, and also helping in case of emergency animal rescue.

- Improve the lives of street animals by providing them with medical care, food and water
- Find them new homes through adoption.

Impoverished Children: You will be doing activities with local children from poor areas of Santiago including playing, painting, singing, teaching basic concepts, feeding, doing sports, analyzing behaviors, supervising activities, and basic caring and spending time with them.

- Improve the lives of impoverished children by providing care and support with schoolwork, skills and hobbies. 

 

Day 10 / Saturday: Transfer to Santiago Bus Station & Bus Santiago - Valparaiso (B) 

Enjoy one last breakfast at your homestay before packing up your belongings and saying goodbye to your host family. Take a transfer to the Santiago bus station where you will connect with your bus to the nearby UNESCO World Heritage Site town of Valparaiso. Get settled in to your accommodation and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. Overnight in Valparaiso.

 

Day 11 / Sunday: Valparaiso City Walking Tour (B) 

Take a walking tour of the Valparaiso today with a knowledgeable local guide to learn the history and intriguing stories about this picturesque town, famous for its bohemian culture, brightly coloured houses, street art, and beautiful seaside views. Relax in the evening with free time to go out for dinner on your own or explore some of the city’s nightlife. Overnight in Valparaiso.

 

Day 12 / Monday: Valparaiso Free Day (B) 

Enjoy a day of relaxing or optional activities and sightseeing in Valparaiso on your own. Overnight in Valparaiso.

 

Day 13 / Tuesday: Bus Valparaiso - Santiago (B) 

Say goodbye to the charming town of Valparaiso today as you take a bus back to Santiago for your last night on tour. Go out to a Santiago nightclub and party until the wee hours on your own if you’re keen. Overnight in Santiago.

 

Day 14 / Wednesday: End of the Trip (B) 

Today your trip will come to an end as you check out of your accommodation. If you are flying out of Santiago on this day, you can book an optional Airport Drop-off (not included). We wish you safe travels!

 

SUGGESTED PACKING LIST: Comfortable walking shoes, sandals, sun hat, sunblock, sun glasses, camera, extra batteries and memory card, hand sanitizer, personal first aid kit, water bottle.  Bring extra cash for snacks, water, personal expenses.

DON'T FORGET THE ESSENTIALS: Original passport, visa (if applicable), insurance card, personal medications.
