The skinniest country in the world (measuring 4,300 km in length and 175 km wide) on average is also South America’s most prosperous and stable. Although most of the population, agriculture, politics, history and culture in concentrated in the central part of the country near Santiago, the far reaching northern and southern halves of Chile boast incredible natural wonders and landscapes that make you feel like you are discovering this untamed land all by yourself.
Chile’s two most biggest tourist draws are by far the Atacama Desert, one of the highest and driest deserts in the world and the Torres del Paine National Park in the Chilean Patagonia. The Atacama averages 3,000 meters above sea level with scarce human population, virtually no living species and a terrain that compares to Mars. The region has become a popular filming location for Mars-like reproductions. You will most likely make a stop through the town of San Pedro de Atacama for a few days on your way to or from the Atacama and Uyuni deserts.
As you make your way south into the mysteriously beautiful fjords and inlets of the southern Pacific coast you may find yourself wondering in disbelief that you are still traveling in the same country. Snow-capped mountains give way to slender glaciers pushing themselves toward the sea. These frigid landscapes are home to a surprisingly wide variety of native flora and fauna. Hikers flock to Torres del Paine National Park in the summer months from December to March to trek to Base Torre and Grey Glacier for striking views of dramatic natural scenery.
Sip on a glass of fine Chilean wine and savor the flavors of freshly-caught wild salmon as you reflect on the unforgettable experiences you’ve had in this beautiful country.
