CORPORATE & SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

At Bamba Experience, we believe that traveling has a huge impact on people’s lives. Not only our clients’ lives, but also on the lives of the local people in the communities we visit. We know that our customers are sensitive to the impact we all make on the environment and on local communities, so we have made sure that our #1 priority is to follow sustainable travel practices and responsible tourism.

From day one, Bamba Experience understands the importance of corporate and social responsibility. As backpackers ourselves we have been in our clients’ shoes and as business owners, we also identify with our local business partners. We are aware of the opportunities to develop sustainable tourism in every corner of our planet and of the positive long‐term effects this can have.

Corporate Responsibility at Bamba Experience focuses on maintaining honest business practices while respecting the environmental and social impacts we may have. We also place importance on our employee well being and giving back to charitable organizations. Our initiatives include the following:

● Reducing our carbon footprint: All of the transportation options included in our trips are by way of public transportation such as buses, shuttles, ferries and trains. By using existing means of transportation in each country, we avoid creating additional pollution, therefore reducing our carbon footprint to a minimum. We are in the process of implementing a carbon offsetting program in which clients can participate by making a voluntary donation through our website. (This will be available in 2015)

● Offering volunteer opportunities: Our clients are often eager to participate in responsible tourism and one excellent way they can do this is through our volunteering programs in Cuzco, Peru. We are constantly searching out new ways to help by finding volunteering opportunities around the globe.

● Donating 1% of our profits to charity: Bamba Experience gives back to our worldwide community by donating 1% of our total profits to charitable organizations.

● Investing in our employees: From the employees located in our Mexico City headquarters to the porters that work hard on the Inca Trail Trek in Peru, we make sure their personal needs and professional growth is always a priority. Our employees in the field are provided with regular training, adequate equipment and any extras they need to do their job well. All of our operations abide strictly to the established laws and protocols of the country in which they are located. We meet industry standards in salary and employee benefits. We offer frequent group workshops that provide employees with professional tools and training opportunities on business and leadership topics. Employees often have the chance to attend international travel fairs as well as visiting suppliers to test services and conduct inspections. We also provide them with benefits including healthcare, paid time off, yearly bonus, yearly party, weekly group lunch, weekly team‐building activity and weekly group sports.

● Partnerships with local businesses: We offer trips on every continent of the planet, which means we have a worldwide impact. We take care in searching out local partners who make it their priority to uphold sustainable tourism standards with a positive impact on their communities. We require our suppliers to abide by local laws and regulations including operating with the proper licenses and insurance coverage.

● Creating jobs worldwide: By working with local operators, we increased demand for their services substantially, which in turn creates a need to hire more employees locally. Instead of sending someone from overseas, we prefer all new‐hires to be locally interviewed and trained so we know we are having a positive impact on the community.

● ‘Be Safe, Be Happy, Be Bamba’ best practices: In efforts to assure responsible operations by our local suppliers, and ourselves, we have developed a ‘Be Safe, Be Happy, Be Bamba’ set of best practices for accommodation, activity, transportation and 3rd party suppliers which are assessed on a regular basis, plus a written emergency plan.

Currently we are active members of the ATTA and WYSTC sharing best practices and responsible operations throughout the tourism industry. We aim to integrate new best practices and raise the bar for industry standards on responsible tourism. We work side by side with our industry partners to ensure safe and ethical tourism practices.

Looking back on the past 10 years, we know we have come a long way from day 1 and we are also aware that there are great opportunities for growth and improvement ahead. We will continue to encourage our existing teams to uphold high standards of responsible tourism as well as search for promising new local partners in each new destination.
